MikeyPod 268 | Filmmakers Chelsea Moore and Erica Rose

I was thrilled to talk with queer femme filmmakers Chelsea Moore and Erica Rose about their film, Girl Talk. We talked a good bit about why storytelling is such a powerful tool for social change, the need for underrepresented people to tell their own stories. and so much more. I know you’re going to love this conversation!
Chelsea Moore and Erica Rose founded Sour Peach Films to focus on stories about female sexuality, portraits of individuals who are often forgotten or overlooked in mainstream media, and exploring identity within new contexts. Their mission is to not only be diverse in front of the camera but to actively employ racial, gender and sexual orientation diversity behind the camera.

MikeyPod 267 | Cartoonist Keith Knight

I met Keith Knight at Patrecon a couple of weeks ago after his panel on navigating financial independence as a creator. I loved what he had to say on the panel, and of course love the way he uses his art to address racism. We talk here about his work, his music, his exciting news with Hulu, and how he has put together his career as an independent artist.
Keith Knight is an American cartoonist and musician. Presenting his unique take on the militarization of the nation’s police force, and the unchecked killing of unarmed citizens, Knight’s cartoons are infused with urgency, humor, satire, politics, and race.  His work is designed to provoke constructive, civil dialogue amongst people young and old, left and right, of all colors and orientations.  His regular feature The K Chronicles appears in various outlets, including DailyKos and previously appeared in the San Francisco Examiner, while (Th)ink is published on several newspapers and websites. A syndicated daily strip for United Media, The Knight Life, was launched in 2008. Knight is also the artist for two strips appearing in Mad, “Father O’Flannity’s Hot Tub Confessions” and “Bully Baby”.

MikeyPod 266 | Filmmaker Allison Argo

Allison Argo and I just missed each other at the Compassion Arts Festival in Boston, but that didn’t stop us from finding the time to chat about her absolutely magnificent film, The Last Pig. The film is a intimate journey into the life of a pig farmer as he grapples with death, searches for compassion, and finally finds the courage to change.
Allison Argo’s films have won over 100 awards internationally, including six national Emmys, duPont Columbia, Genesis, Jackson Hole, NY, Banff, and dozens of awards from New Zealand to Japan. Argo is known for her emotionally-charged and deeply personal films – in particular her intimate portraits of abused and endangered animals. The nearly two dozen award-winning films she’s produced, directed and written have all been broadcast by PBS and/or National Geographic and have reached audiences worldwide. The Last Pig continues Argo’s mission to provide “a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves”– and to deepen understanding and respect for all beings.
