MikeyPod 256 | Filmmaker Emmett Jack Lundberg

My friend Emmett Jack Lundberg returns to the podcast this week to discuss the new season of his critically acclaimed series, Brothers, which is the first narrative series to showcase stories of transmen.

Emmett and I talk about how the success of the show has allowed him to increase production values and the size of his team, casting trans actors, and the different types of challenges that show up with increased “success.” It’s always a thrill to chat with Emmett, I know you’ll dig our conversation.
At the top of the show, I review my third week with Mark Wood and Jamie Robinson‘s 30 Days to Wellness, the challenges of self-sabotage and the power of overcoming this habit. I’m 6.5 pounds down this month and even more, excited to be embarking upon a more healthful life. All of this digging and feeling inspired the guys to bring in self-love coach and astrologer Melissa Simonson to make sure I am primed and ready for success at the end of these thirty days. Here’s hoping I find the words to adequately describe the transformation I am experiencing right now!

MikeyPod 255 | Painter Jane O’Hara

I sometimes feel a bit insecure talking with visual artists. I know so little about that world, so I fear I won’t have the knowledge or even basic vocabulary to carry on a worthwhile conversation. Enter painter Jane O’Hara, whose charming approachability is matched only by her fascinating path as an artist who makes works about animals. She was an absolute treasure on this week’s podcast.
Jane and I talked about her history as an artist, some of the recurring metaphors in her work, and about how her work taught her about her own beliefs and inspired big changes in how she lives her life.
At the top of the show, I (sleepily) recap my second week with Mark Wood and Jamie Robinson‘s 30 Days to Wellness, and talk a bit about the upcoming Plant-Powered Vegan Food Fest in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Do accept my apology for the low energy intro! It was a long weekend, BUT this marks the seventh week in a row that I’ve been back on the weekly podcast grind!  So glad I got it together and recorded this thing!
Also in the land of amazing news to report: the fine folks at A Well Fed World have awarded me a grant to support my work this year! This is going to make a huge impact on my work on The Animal Album and The Animal Book! I am so grateful for them!

MikeyPod 254 | Filmmaker Carrie Hawks

Carrie Hawks is a filmmaker whose film, black enuf* explores their journey as “a queer oddball seeking approval from black peers despite a serious lack of hip-hop credentials.” This animated documentary playfully explores race and self-acceptance through Carrie’s experience, and interviews with their family and friends.
Carrie Hawks and I talked about their process in making this film, their journey toward becoming an animator and how they deal with “imposter syndrome.”
At the top of the show, I recap my first week with Mark Wood and Jamie Robinson‘s 30 Days to Wellness, and reflect on a lobby disruption I participated in at the NYC Department of Health. We were protesting Health Commisioner Mary Bassett’s ongoing refusal to shut down an illegal ritual sacrifice that takes the lives of 60,000 animals each year and compromises public health. Check out theirturn.net for ongoing updates about our efforts.
