MikeyPod 211 | Author Joshua D. Fischer

Joshua D. Fischer joins me on the podcast this week to discuss his book, Meet the Regulars, which features stores and portraits of the everyday and famous people who frequent Brooklyn’s hottest (or most underrated) hangouts. Joshua and I talk about his work with the book, gentrification, and one of my favorite topics: how to cope with big city living without succumbing to misanthropy.
Joshua D. Fischer received his master’s in journalism from the Cultural Reporting and Criticism program at New York University. He’s been published in the New York magazine partner Bedford + Bowery, NYLON, and Salon. Joshua lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

21 – Because 7 8 9

This week the ladies go way off topic before launching into their favorite murders, which focuses on the Cleveland Elementary School shootings (aka “I don’t like Mondays”) and 1800s nurse/serial killer Jane Toppan. Please remember to stay sexy and don’t get murdered!

MikeyPod 210 | Musician Joy Askew

I’m a long time fan of Joy Askew, both as a musician and as a person. She’s a fantastic musician, a tireless activist, and a great friend. Joy has performed with some brilliant artists as well: Laurie Anderson, Peter Gabriel, and Joe Jackson, to name only a few.  We talked about the current climate for independent artists, both the good and the bad, our mutual appreciation of crowdfunding, and Joy’s inspiration behind her songs. The new album, Queen Victoria, sounds like it’s going to be fantastic and you should seriously consider pre-ordering a copy on Joy’s Pledge Music page.
Coming up in just a few weeks, the first live episode of this podcast. Here in NYC at the Kraine Theater on June 27, join me and my guests Eve Beglarian, Victoria Libertore, Duncan Pflaster, and Will Shishmanian for a great night of adventurous musical artists as part of the Queerly Festival. MikeyPod 209 | Musician Will Shishmanian

Will Shishmanian is a fantastic singer/songwriter and one of my guests for the upcoming MikeyPod Live! event that I am producing for the Queerly Festival here in NYC. I just ran across Will’s music recently and am so proud to have him as my guest both at the Queerly Festival and here on the podcast. We cover a great range of topics from getting acclimated to being a NYC resident to writing songs about cats. Give it a listen, and make plans to join us on June 27th at the Kraine Theater!

Will Shishmanian is a singer/songwriter and composer based out of NYC who plays everything from fingerpicking folk to rock to funk and R&B. Shishmanian graduated from Ithaca College with a Bachelors in Music Composition. While there he performed his solo music with many talented musicians, composed music for student films, and composed, music directed, and produced an original musical called “The Lesbian Fairytale Musical.” After graduating from IC, Shishmanian moved to Astoria, Queens, where he currently lives and works.
