Four days ago my pal Jill Strominger at New Amsterdam Records sent me Finnegan Shanahan‘s new album, The Two Halves. She knew I would love and it she was right. I am fascinated by the fact that it is inspired by a map, and in love with the spirit and buoyancy of the music in this song cycle.
The album is described as “part travelogue and part song cycle” and was commissioned and recorded by Contemporaneous, a 21 musician ensemble whose mission is “to bring to life the music of now.” There’s so much more to say about this album — the journey Finnegan Shanahan takes us from the Hudson Valley to outer space, or the 18 pieces of corresponding artwork by illustrator Render Stetson — but I think that is best left for Finnegan’s explanation on the podcast. Give it a listen!
In other news, my beloved Drip service is back in action! It was supposed to shut its doors today, but has now partnered with Kickstarter. I’m thrilled. If you like this podcast, my Drip page is a perfect place for you to lend some financial support and score some bonus materials.
I’ll be doing a free, public work in progress reading of my The Animal Show on April 28th. It’ll be raw and delicious and in the loft at historic Judson Memorial Church. Here are all the details.
Finally, stop by my Instagram page for a chance to win a signed copy of Finnegan’s CD, The Two Halves. You’ve got till Monday to enter. Get on it!
Thanks for listening, and if you like what you hear please tell a friend.

I came across Harris Markowitz on Snapchat some time ago. Though I don’t remember exactly how I discovered him, I do remember becoming an immediate fan. His snaps are ridiculously creative and compelling and, with his company A Cereal Production, he has created content for companies like Coca-Cola and Jolly Rancher.
Whenever people tell me they “don’t get” Snapchat, I immediately direct them to Harris to see how he uses the platform and the potential it holds. His Snapumentary was produced for a discussion with Naritiv at Sundance 2016 is another great primer for the power contained within Snapchat as a platform.
In the podcast, Harris and I talk about his background as a self-taught filmmaker, how the perceived limitations of Snapchat inspire his creativity, and some basics about how to get rolling with your own Snapchat account. Chatting with him gave me a real creative jolt, and I hope it does the same for you.
In other news, I talk a little about where I’m headed next after the demise of the Drip subscription service, the latest on my solo multi-media piece The Animal Show and play some music I am currently excited about. Give the podcast a listen and follow Harris at all of the places – links below. Thanks for listening!

Rae Spoon is a musician, author, and speaker whose book, First Spring Grass Fire, was just named one of 10 best books by transgender authors featuring trans characters by The Guardian. Rae’s 8th album, Armor, was just released last month and it’s fantastic!
I first met Rae a few years ago when I got to perform with them and Ivan Coyote. I actually was one of the opening acts for their show, Gender Failure. I performed the very first bit of my own Tentative Armor that night, and it was really inspiring to see Rae and Ivan perform music and storytelling, especially when I realized Rae was using Ableton Live, which I had just begun learning at the time. Anyway, I am really happy to have Rae on the show and I hope you will pick up their new album on Bandcamp or wherever fine digital albums are sold.
